Cowboys' Rolando McClain suspended 10 games for substance abuse violation

Rolando McClain may be out of chances, at least in the NFL.
The former first-round pick has been suspended again, this time for the first 10 games of the 2016 season, for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse.
McClain was suspended for the first four games last season for violating the same policy. When he returned, he started the Dallas Cowboys’ final 11 games, totaling two sacks, an interception he returned for a touchdown, and 80 tackles.
(Getty Images)
Dallas re-signed McClain to an incentive-laden deal earlier this year, with a base salary of $1.25 million, but one that had a $5 million max value and included a $750,000 signing bonus. Under the terms of the collective-bargaining agreement, McClain may have to repay the signing bonus.
The eighth overall pick in 2010 out of Alabama, McClain was released by the Oakland Raiders after the 2012 season; the team had deactivated him for its final five games that year. McClain has retired twice, in between spending a month with the Baltimore Ravens.
McClain isn’t the only defensive starter the Cowboys lost to suspension on Thursday: the team also announced that defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence’s appeal has been denied, and he will be out for the first four games of the season. Lawrence is also sitting because of violation of the substance abuse policy.

NBA and Hornets do not support new version of N.C. 'bathroom law'

The NBA has spent much of the spring and early summer engaged in one of the more notable state policy issues of 2016. In February, the North Carolina legislature passed House Bill 2, one of the most sweeping anti-LGBT laws in the nation. Although primarily known for its controversial “bathroom law” that forces transgender people from using the restroom assigned to the gender they were born into rather than the one they have chosen, HB 2 barred the creation of any new laws extending anti-discrimination to the LGBT community and even set limits on changes to the minimum wage. The outcry against HB 2 has been swift and constant, with many corporations that do business in North Carolina making statements against the law and threatening changes to their practices.
The NBA made its move by threatening a change of location for its 2017 All-Star Weekend, set to take place in Charlotte from February 17-19. Although initial statements were somewhat vague, commissioner Adam Silver clarified that the law would have to change to keep the event in North Carolina. The Hornets and owner Michael Jordan have backed that decision.
As our Dan Devine wrote on Tuesday, the NBA has been involved in discussions to put forth new legislation to resolve the controversy. A report from Nick Ochsner of Charlotte CBS affiliate WBTV indicated that those efforts had led to the bill now in front of the legislature, which would allow transgender people to “prove” their new gender.
The NBA and Hornets issued a statement Thursday making it very clear that they do not endorse the new bill:
In response to published reports regarding the NBA’s involvement in amended HB2 legislation currently before the North Carolina legislature, the NBA and Charlotte Hornets issued the following statement:
“We have been engaged in dialogue with numerous groups at the city and state levels, but we do not endorse the version of the bill that we understand is currently before the legislature. We remain committed to our guiding principles of inclusion, mutual respect and equal protections for all. We continue to believe that constructive engagement with all sides is the right path forward. There has been no new decision made regarding the 2017 NBA All-Star Game.”
The statement is not especially surprising, because no one seems to like the proposed changes to HB 2. A report from several Charlotte Observer journalists shows LGBT activists (and anyone who loves someone who’s not straight, really) outraged by the idea that trans people should have to prove their gender, while proponents of HB 2 say the changes are a product of pressure from the NBA and other companies that do not represent citizens of North Carolina. That same report cites a source that claims the NBA would see these changes as a “step in the right direction” regardless, but it’s clear why they would not want to be seen as endorsing them in their current form.
The official statement does not represent a major change in messaging for the NBA and the Hornets. If it proves anything, it’s that the league is unlikely to accept cosmetic changes to HB 2 without a substantial shift in the spirit of the law. The league has built up a meaningful relationship with the LGBT community and made history this weekend by becoming the first professional sports league to march in the New York City Pride Parade. It does not appear that Silver has any interest in squandering that progress to keep the All-Star Game in Charlotte.
It’s certainly a public relations decision to release a statement that denies support for a very unpopular piece of legislation. But this is a case in which those optics match up with the right thing to do.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is officially joining Man United, so here's what you can expect

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It’s really happening. It’s finally happening. Manchester United is signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The sport’s most colorful player is joining its most colorful league.
Well, actually, if we were to phrase it properly, by the style guide mandated by our second-favorite (@YahooSoccer) Twitter account @ZlatanFacts, it’s the other way around. Zlatan is signing Man United.
Zlatan Facts
Manchester United will move to Zlatan.
Just as Zlatan didn’t quit playing for Sweden after his nation’s Euro 2016 debacle.
Zlatan Facts
Zlatan does not retire from International football. International football retires from Zlatan.
This will surely be the most talked about and scrutinized move of the summer. Even though such transfers as Henrikh Mkhitaryan potentially going to Manchester United, or Samuel Umtiti signing with Barcelona, or Paul Pogba leaving Juventus for wherever he’s headed – if anywhere – will likely have a much bigger impact on the balance of power in the game, Zlatan just has a way about him.
Nearing his 35th birthday, the big Swedish striker is coming off his most prolific season ever, scoring 38 league goals in just 31 games to lead his steamrolling Paris Saint-Germain to his fourth league title in four seasons there. That’s eight more goals than he had ever scored in a single campaign. Indeed, his four-year league haul of 113 goals with PSG is easily the most productive stretch of his career.
The Premier League will be more demanding than Ligue 1 though. And with United, he won’t get nearly as many scoring chances. Given how static Zlatan has become, it’s quite possible that his enormous $300,000-per-week contract, which will make him one of the highest-paid players in England, will become an albatross on a team that needs rebuilding more than reloading.
But all of that seems to miss the point and essence of Zlatan. He’s a good striker – and was not so long ago a great striker. He’ll score goals. And we’ll finally get to see him in the most visible sports league in the world. United will reunite him with new manager Jose Mourinho, who has a personality that’s almost as big – the two get on famously since their days together at Inter Milan nonetheless, or perhaps because of this.
What Zlatan ensures above goals, though, is entertainment. His personality is so big – the scowling, the swaggering, the impossible goals, the one-liners – that he becomes his own show within the game he plays. For a leading club that has lost a great deal of its glamor, landing Zlatan, even at his near-geriatric age, is an optical coup, if not necessarily a footballing one.
After all, just look at the number of favorites and re-tweets on his own announcement.
Zlatan Ibrahimović
Time to let the world know. My next destination is
Because, of course, it was Zlatan who announced where he was going, rather than the club saying who it was bringing in.

Marlins finalizing deal for reliever Fernando Rodney from Padres

Fernando Rodney
The Miami Marlins are finalizing a deal to acquire reliever Fernando Rodney from the San Diego Padres for Class A pitching prospect Chris Paddack on Thursday, two sources told Yahoo Sports, kicking off trade season a little more than a month from the Aug. 1 deadline.
Rodney, who posted a 0.31 ERA closing for the Padres, bolsters an already-strong Marlins bullpen that includes closer A.J. Ramos and setup men David Phelps and Kyle Barraclough. At 41-37, Miami has weathered inconsistent starting pitching, Giancarlo Stanton slumping and the suspension of Dee Gordon to position itself alongside the New York Mets, the defending National League champions, and in the thick of the wild-card race.
Under new manager Don Mattingly, the Marlins have played a strong brand of baseball, with near-flawless infield defense and breakout years from outfielders Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich to buttress Stanton’s struggles. While Jose Fernandez could start the All-Star Game, the rest of the rotation – Adam Conley, Tom Koehler, Wei-Yin Chen and Justin Nicolino – has disappointed. The cost of starting pitching in trades at this point was prohibitive enough the Marlins chose to focus on bullpen help and jump the market.
Keith Law of ESPN first reported the sides were close on a trade.
For San Diego, Rodney’s departure doesn’t necessarily signal the desperately needed rebuild but shows general manager A.J. Preller’s modus operandi this summer may be different than last, when he held on to some of his most valuable assets. Not only did Rodney’s price tag appeal to the Marlins, so did the club option for next year that, after performance bonuses from this season are rolled over, will likely end up in the $4 million range, a massive bargain in a relief market expected to mushroom this offseason.
Paddack, 20, was an eighth-round pick last season who has excelled in Low-A this season. Over his past three starts, he has pitched 15 hitless innings, struck out 28 and walked one. On the season, Paddack has a 0.95 ERA over six starts and has punched out 48 and walked two in 28 1/3 innings.

Bucks extend GM John Hammond to help transition franchise

The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to a one-year contract extension with general manager John Hammond, clearing the way for him to step away from full-time duties as the franchise’s top basketball executive in 2018, league sources told The Vertical.
Hammond’s deal includes him assuming a consultant’s role with the organization in 2018, which will allow him to help the team transition to Justin Zanik, his successor as general manager, league sources said.
John Hammond has been Milwaukee's general manager since 2008. (AP)The Bucks hired Zanik as an assistant general manager in May with the understanding that he would leave his assistant general manager job with the Utah Jazz to become the Bucks’ general manager-in-waiting.
Hammond was part of the process that hired Zanik.
The transfer of power in the front office is another in a sequence of significant moves that co-owners Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry have made since the $550 million purchase of the Bucks in 2014. The Bucks hired Jason Kidd as coach in 2014 and are working with the city and state to move into a new downtown arena.
Hammond has been Milwaukee's general manager since 2008, a tenure that has included three playoff appearances and his selection as the NBA Executive of the Year in 2010. Hammond drafted franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft.
Zanik's ascent had been rapid within the Jazz organization. He joined Utah’s front office in the summer of 2013 after a nine-year run as a player agent with Andy Miller at ASM Sports. Zanik had been a player agent for 15 years. Zanik worked closely with Utah general manager Dennis Lindsey on player personnel – including the drafting of Rodney Hood and Dante Exum – and the hiring of Jazz coach Quin Snyder.

Euro 2016: Ronaldo flops and flails, but Portugal beats Poland on penalties

It took a massive left hand from Rui Patricio, and five exquisite penalty kicks, but Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo are on to the semifinals of Euro 2016.
After a 1-1 draw over 120 draining minutes, the Portuguese beat a valiant Poland side 5-3 on penalties. Patricio saved Jakub Blaszczykowski’s spot kick, and Ricardo Quaresma’s subsequent conversion sent Portugal to its fourth Euro semifinal in the past five attempts.
Ronaldo had a largely forgettable game, but stepped up to the spot to smash home Portugal’s opening penalty. Patricio’s save on Poland’s fourth kick was the only difference in the shootout.
The game exploded into life in the second minute, when a cross-field ball skipped over the head of Portuguese right back Cedric and into the path of Polish winger Kamil Grosicki. Grosicki expertly picked out Robert Lewandowski at the penalty spot, and the striker in turn picked out the back of the net:
Camino a Rusia
v [PT 1-0] El gol de : Grosicki escapa, envía el centro y Lewandowski sentencia
Both strikers’ runs were excellent. Arkadiusz Milik’s dart to the near post magnetized the attention of the Portuguese center backs, while Lewandowski shaped his run to creep into the box late. Grosicki’s cross was pinpoint.
Portugal’s response was measured. There was no panic, no unnecessary gambles. A narrow midfield four, composed of three Sporting Lisbon players and 18-year-old Renato Sanches, gradually took control of the game.
Poland continued to threaten on the break though. Milik broke into space only to pull his shot wide. Midway through the half, it was his combination play with Lewandowski that freed up Grosicki to drive into Portugal’s box, but the winger’s left-footed cross was scuffed and cleared.
Portugal’s intensifying pressure paid off in the 33rd minute, when Sanches struck. The teenager, who is off to Bayern Munich this summer for €35 million (plus up to €45 in bonuses), received a lay-off from Nani, and his left-footed strike deflected past Lukasz Fabianski at the keeper’s near post

FootballGIFs
Goal: 1-1 , Sanches:
The second half turned into a choppy, cagey affair. But it was punctuated by misery for Ronaldo.
The maverick attacker was on the end of several chances. First, he fired wide with his left foot at the near post after being sprung into the box by Nani. Then things worsened for one of the world’s best. His right foot hit nothing but air when it swung at Nani’s cross.
In the 86th minute, Ronaldo whiffed again, though this time the attempted skill was far more difficult. A directly vertical ball over the top of the Polish defense drifted agonizingly slowly into his path. Ronaldo twisted his body as the ball arrived, and tried to take it with his left foot on a half volley, but again swung and missed.
JAMÓN IBÉRICO
-Hola guapa, ¿tienes novio? +Sí
Ronaldo’s exasperation showed as he brought his hands through his slicked-back hair. With the Portuguese star unable to break the deadlock, the game headed to extra time.
The additional 30 minutes, however, did nothing to alter the course of Ronaldo’s night. He awkwardly stabbed at a majestic Eliseu cross with the outside of his left foot, only to watch the ball excrutiatingly evade him:
Sportnieuws.nl
Ronaldo WHAT are you doing?!
Both sides had played 120 minutes just five days earlier in the Round of 16, and the extra session reflected that. The fresh legs of Joao Moutinho and Quaresma for Portugal and Bartosz Kapustka for Poland couldn’t inject life into increasingly slow transitions.
Attacking progress was limited. Poland’s best venture forward resulted in a Lewandowski cross that slithered untouched across the Portuguese six-yard box.
The second 15-minute period petered out into penalties.
Lewandowski calmly equalized Ronaldo’s opener in the shootout. Sanches, Milik, Moutinho, Kamil Glik and Nani all were successful from the spot. Blaszczykowski was then denied.
Portugal moves on to play the winner of Friday’s Belgium-Wales quarterfinal on July 6 at 3 p.m. EST in Lyon.

Phillies prospect Matt Imhof has eye removed after freak accident
"I'm lucky to be surrounded by the most loving and understanding people in the world."
Phillies pitching prospect Matt Imhof said his right eye was "crushed like a grape" in an accident while exercising last week.
Following multiple tests and surgeries, his doctors were forced to remove Imhof's right eye as a result of the damage.
"It was decided that the best chance I had to live a normal life was to have my right eye removed and have a prosthetic one put in," he wrote in a lengthy Instagram post. "This decision was not an easy one to make but to me it seemed like the right one so on Tuesday afternoon I went forward with the surgery."
Here's how the injury happened, according to Philly.com:
Imhof was injured during a postgame exercise routine at Brevard County’s Space Coast Stadium, a Phillies official said. He was struck in the face while using a rubber resistance band anchored to a wall. The mounted base broke off the wall, a source said, and damaged Imhof’s right eye.
Imhof says this has been the hardest week of his life and he is grateful he still has vision in his left eye.
The 22-year-old was a second-round pick by the franchise in 2014.

Look how Jim Irsay announced Andrew Luck is NFL's highest-paid player

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay recently said that Andrew Luck would receive a new deal prior to the holiday weekend. Irsay beat the deadline and didn’t back down from that statement — in fact, he broke the news on Twitter.
Of course, it was lacking some details — you know, such as years, total money, guaranteed dollars, Luck’s full name …
Jim Irsay
Andrew has signed through 2021
The Colts’ official Twitter account backed it up seconds later. They added Luck’s last name in a fancy graphic, which is nice.
Indianapolis Colts
So Jim … about the money?
Jim Irsay
$140 Million over 6 Years... Biggest Contract in NFL History... Congrats to #12!!!
Thanks! (Note the 39-minute lag time between Irsay’s two tweets.)
Luck said in a statement that he’s “thrilled and excited to continue with this great organization. I am thankful to the Irsay family and Mr. Irsay for providing me with this great opportunity and the trust that they’ve shown in me. I can’€™t wait for this season to start.”
Added Irsay: “This is an exciting day for the organization and Colts fans around the globe. Andrew is the consummate professional, possesses extraordinary talent and is our leader on and off the field. When you consider what this team has accomplished in four seasons with Andrew under center, you cannot help but be thrilled about the future.”
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has a new contract. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings)It appears that Luck will become the highest-paid player in the game on an annual basis, too. Check out what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter are reporting on some of the specifics, which are not shocking, even after Luck’s injury-plagued flameout in 2015. That’s been the direction this thing has headed for a long time.
Ian Rapoport
On his 5-year extension, QB Andrew Luck is now the highest paid player in the NFL, source said. Puts him over Joe Flacco's $22.1M.
Even with the slight variation between what Irsay and Schefter had on the total money, that’s a lot of cheese any way you slice it. But that’s the going rate these days for a player of Luck’s talent and age (26). And the beautiful thing for Luck? He could hit the market again by age 32 or renegotiate — assuming he plays well, of course — once the NFL’s salary cap inevitably tops $200 million one day.
The Colts can’t afford to have Luck getting sliced up again — anyone remember that lacerated kidney last season? Luck certainly did. Which is why he wasted no time doing this:

Michael Phelps qualifies for fifth Olympics

GettyImages-543706848
Michael Phelps is a five-time Olympian.
Phelps, who will turn 31 on Thursday, qualified for Rio 2016 with ease on Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha. The legendary American swimmer posted a 1:54.84 in the 200-meter butterfly to win the event and clinch a spot in the upcoming summer games.
Phelps still has two more events remaining at the trials: the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley. Including relays, though, he could swim in up to six events at the Olympics.
Phelps first qualified for the Olympics as a 15-year-old in 2000. He returned home without a medal, but finished fifth in the 200-meter butterfly in Sydney.
Phelps’ coming-out party was staged in Athens in 2004. At just 19 years of age, he won six gold medals — two as part of relay teams — and two bronze medals.
Phelps’ greatness culminated in 2008 in Beijing with a record-breaking eight gold medals, the most by an individual at a single Olympics. The previous record had been held by American swimmer Mark Spitz since 1972.
Phelps pushed his career Olympic gold-medal tally to 18 with four more in London in 2012.
Phelps had said the London Olympics would be his last, but in 2014, he came out of retirement. The following year, he won three gold medals at nationals.
Phelps is the first American male swimmer to qualify for five Olympics.

Steven Stamkos staying with Lightning, sweepstakes over

(Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)
The Steven Stamkos sweepstakes is over before it began.
Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that the Tampa Bay Lightning star will remain a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
According to McKenzie, Stamkos has agreed to an eight-year deal with an average annual value of $8.5 million. The Lightning were the only team that could offer an eighth year on a contract, and needed to do so before July 1.
Stamkos was set to become an unrestricted free agent – arguably the most coveted in NHL history – with suitors ranging from his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs to cash-rich teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres.
Stamkos and his reps met with the Maple Leafs on Monday, in a meeting that reportedly included the CEO of Canadian Tire and the mayor of Toronto.
But in the end, Stamkos decided to remain with the team that drafted him, and work with coach Jon Cooper and GM Steve Yzerman to try to bring a Stanley Cup to Tampa.
So it turns out that making $10 million annually wasn’t paramount for Stamkos, nor was a move up north. But as we reported earlier, being in Florida’s economy means that he’ll make as much cash on the deal than he would have playing in another market. Unless of course he wins the Cup this season and then decided he wants a trade to Toronto.
Congrats, Lightning fans. Well, at least until you have re-sign everyone else …

Canadiens send P.K. Subban to Predators for Shea Weber in blockbuster trade

MONTREAL, QC - MAY 6: P.K. Subban #76 of the Montreal Canadiens celebrates after scoring the second goal against the Boston Bruins in the first period...
The Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators have completed a blockbuster trade of superstar defensemen.
The Habs have dealt P.K . Subban to Nashville for Predators captain Shea Weber. The trade is a player-for-player deal with no salary retained on either side.
Last week, Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin had constantly said he had no desire to trade Subban, even though there have often been questions about whether the flamboyant Subban and coach Michel Therrien got along. Last season, Therrien called out Subban – calling a play he made in a game against the Colorado Avalanche “selfish.”
There were also queries on whether Subban and his outspoken nature were troublesome for the generally button-downed, tradition oriented Canadiens.
The Canadiens opted to bring back Therrien after a tumultuous 2015-16 that saw the team start the year an NHL record 9-0-0 and miss the playoffs.
“I’ll be Canadien for life.Really happy to be going to a team that wants me in the Predators,” Subban told Kevin Weekes after the trade via Twitter.
At the NHL Awards in Las Vegas, Subban addressed the persistent rumors surrounding him.
“At the end of the day I feel confident as a player and what I accomplish. I feel confident that I’m one of the best defensemen in the league. I don’t need anybody to tell me that, I know that when I step on the ice. I want to do that for the Montreal Canadiens,” he said.
Subban, 27, who won the Norris Trophy in 2013 notched 51 points in 68 games played last season. The Canadiens drafted Subban in the second-round of the 2007 NHL Draft, and he has been adored by the team’s fans for his giving nature and local charity work
He’s under contract through the 2021-22 season at $9 million per-year. He also had a no-trade clause that was supposed to kick in July 1, which would have made a deal more difficult.
“P.K. Subban is an elite offensive defenseman with tremendous skill and contagious energy that makes the Nashville Predators a better team now and into the future,” Predators general manager David Poile said in a statement released by the team. “Superstar defensemen of his caliber are a rare commodity, and we are thrilled to add him to the organization.”
Weber was drafted by the Predators in 2003, and was named the team’s captain in 2010. But he had often gone through offseason struggles with Nashville in regards to his contract status.
In the summer of 2011, Nashville took Weber to arbitration where they used Keith Yandle’s contract as a comparable. The following summer he signed a 14-year $110 million offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers that the team matched.
The 30-year-old Weber is a three-time Norris Trophy finalist and had 51 points and 20 goals last season while averaging 25:23 of ice-time paired with Roman Josi.
Even though his numbers had remained consistent throughout his career, there were questions about his ability to keep up in the faster-paced game of today’s NHL – especially after a Game 7 playoff performance against the San Jose Sharks last playoff where he was a minus-3.
This is the second major trade of a defenseman in the past year for Poile. He dealt Seth Jones to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Ryan Johansen. This is arguably the biggest transaction in Nashville history.

Mutilated body found near Rio Olympic beach volleyball site

Olympic beach volleyball stadium on Copacabana beach
With a dark cloud already hanging over the 2016 Summer Olympics, the last thing Rio de Janeiro organizers needed was more bad publicity. But they certainly got it Wednesday.
Parts of a mutilated body were discovered on Copacabana beach, mere yards away from the the 2016 Summer Olympics beach volleyball site, police said.
The body was initially found by a local street vendor, who reported the findings to a Rio newspaper. Police have not commented on the finding, nor have they provided further details.
Beach volleyball site preparations were halted a few weeks ago because of missing permits, but were resumed four days later, and are expected to be complete in time for the opening day of competition.
The washed up body is the latest of many concerns headed into the Rio games. Local political turmoil, a financial crisis, the Zika virus, delayed construction, water pollution and doping controversies are just some of the issues that threaten to haunt the event.
The Olympics begin Aug. 5, with beach volleyball competition set to commence on Aug. 6.

Bob Arum believes Manny Pacquiao 'wants to return'

In April, Manny Pacquiao announced his retirement from boxing after a win over Timothy Bradley.
It was the apparent end to a Hall of Fame-worthy career in which he won or was widely recognized as a world champion in eight weight classes, and in which he was the linear champion in five classe
He walked away from the sport that made him rich and famous with a 58-6-2 record and 38 knockouts. He was among the biggest draws of his era.
In May, he was elected to a seat in the Filipino Senate.
He was inaugurated on June 21, which is around the same time that his long-time promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, reserved the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas for an Oct. 15 pay-per-view fight.
BoxingScene reported last week that Pacquiao might fight Adrien Broner later this year.
Arum told Yahoo Sports that he reserved the arena just in case Pacquiao wants to fight again.
“I’m not sure Manny is going to return, but I believe he wants to return,” Arum said. “The question is, can he return and yet fulfill his duties as a senator in the Philippines? I don’t think even he knows that answer yet, because he’s just taken office. But I know for a fact, based on our conversations, that if he can, he is prepared to come back, and Broner is one guy we’re considering.”
A Pacquiao-Broner fight would be a solid pay-per-view match, if it were made. Both men are offensive fighters and there would be the expectation that one would be knocked out.
Broner also appeals to a similar demographic as Floyd Mayweather, albeit on a much smaller scale. But many of those Mayweather fans who rooted him on to victory against Pacquiao would probably be inclined to buy a Pacquiao-Broner fight with the expectation that Broner would take him out.
By reserving Mandalay Bay, Arum gives the fight a potential home if Pacquiao decides he can fight and wants to do so. It also will create a demand for tickets, because like the other major Las Vegas venues for boxing, the MGM Grand Garden and T-Mobile Arena, it holds far fewer people.
Mandalay Bay’s boxing capacity is roughly 11,000, compared to about 16,000 for the MGM and just under 20,000 for T-Mobile.
It’s all conjecture, though, until Arum hears from Pacquiao, which would have to come relatively soon in order to be able to promote the fight. And that may be the reason it does not happen. Pacquiao would need at least eight weeks to train, so say August and September for an Oct. 15 fight.
That would mean if the fight were made, they’d need to do early press conferences and a press tour in late July. Since Top Rank already has a pay-per-view set for July 23 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand featuring Bud Crawford and Viktor Postol in a super lightweight unification bout, that would be a great time to have a potential Pacquiao-Broner news conference with much of the media in town.
That gives Pacquiao a few weeks to get a feel for his new job and whether or not he’ll be able to take time off needed to train and compete.
It seems unlikely, but there is at least somewhat of a chance it happens.

Floyd Mayweather sends $20K tax bill to strip club

Floyd Mayweather
For all of the money that Floyd Mayweather makes, the retired boxer is always trying to find a way to make sure he’s taking advantage of every tax break possible. In what is certainly a unique way to save money, Mayweather is seeking to write off a 2014 visit to Larry Flint’s Hustler Club in Las Vegas where the fighter allegedly spent more than $20,000 on strippers.
According to documents retrieved by the Daily Mail, Mayweather Promotions LLC sent a 1099 tax form to the strip club and wants the club to pay taxes on the $15,000 in singles thrown into the air and $5,000 he and his crew spent at the club on May 25, 2014.
Obviously, the strip club owner is furious with these claims. Jason Mahoney told the UK publication that he felt “insulted” by Mayweather’s tax bill considering that he’s provided Mayweather’s “The Money Team” free admission, VIP seating and up to 20 bottles of alcohol for free.
“Mayweather came to the club with a large group of friends, we gave them everything, comped bottles, comped seating, comped admission, they basically paid for nothing,” Mahoney said. “We should have given Mayweather a 1099 for $10,000. As you saw on the video, they had a big party enjoying themselves.”
YouTube videos of Mayweather and his entourage at the club do exist, although the amount of cash spent was inflated to $100,000. The 1099 paperwork shows that Mayweather spent a total of $20,323.18. But the bigger issue is that Mahoney says that not a single dime went to the club as the strippers who are independent contractors pocketed a majority of it.
“The reason for doing that is to get a tax write-off, but to me it is falsifying your tax records because he threw the money in the air,” he said. “If he wanted to 1099 somebody he should have gotten the names of all the entertainers he threw the money at.”
The P.R. manager for the club, Leo Mena, has said that Mayweather is no longer welcome to the club and was especially offended that the multi-millionaire didn’t tip the cocktail waitresses.
“The club didn’t receive a dollar of Mayweather’s money from him or his team, the girls collected it all off the floor,” he said. “To top it off he never tipped the waitress who served the drinks.”
Mahoney suggested that Mayweather would be welcomed back to the club if he pays admission and apologizes.
Mayweather’s tax attorney Jeff Morse said that it is possible that the form was issued in error and that this could be rectified if the Hustler Club contacted Mayweather Promotions. But, until then, the tax bill stands.

For the first time in over 50 years, a professional baseball team will have multiple women in its starting lineup. The Sonoma Stompers, an independent league team in the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs, will sign and start two women prior to Friday’s game.
The Stompers put out a release Tuesday announcing the club had worked with Francis Ford Coppola’s Virginia Dare Winery “in an effort to promote the recruitment, development and advancement of women in baseball.”
On Wednesday, the team made it official, signing 17-year-old outfielder/pitcher Kelsie Whitmore. The team is also signing 25-year-old pitcher/infielder Stacy Piagno. Both players will be in the starting lineup when the team takes the field Friday against the San Rafael Pacifics.
Whitmore recently graduated from Temecula Valley High School, and has a softball scholarship to Cal State Fullerton next year. Piagno played softball at the University of Tampa, but more recently helped the United States national baseball team capture the gold medal in the 2015 Pan Am Games. During the tournament, Piagno threw a no-hitter against Puerto Rico.
Both players will play for Team USA in the 2016 Women’s Baseball World Cup, according to the Stompers.
With the signing, the Stompers will become the first baseman team since the 1950s to have multiple women on a team. Toni Stone, Mamie “Peanut” Johnson and Constance Morgan all played beside men in the Negro Leagues, according to the release.
Breaking new ground is familiar for the Stompers. Last season, Stompers pitcher Sean Conroy became the first openly gay active baseball player. Conroy came out just before the team celebrated Pride Night, started that game and tossed a complete-game shutout.
While it’s not common, it is possible for players in the Pacific League to get signed by major-league clubs. In May, the Milwaukee Brewers signed pitcher Santos Saldivar. Saldivar pitched for the Stompers during the 2015 and was featured in the book “The Only Rule is it Has to Work,” written by Ben Lindbergh and Sam Miller.
Whether or not this opportunity leads to the first woman playing in the majors remains to be seen. But the signings of Whitmore and Piagno seem like a significant step as far as that’s concerned. No matter what happens, Friday should be a historic day for baseball.

Pistons trade Jodie Meeks to Magic

Jodie Meeks, center, has been hampered by injuries. (AP)The Detroit Pistons traded guard Jodie Meeks to the Orlando Magic, league sources told The Vertical.
The Pistons received a 2019 future second-round pick, sources said.
The Magic had room to acquire Meeks because they were $7.3 million below the cap.
Meeks signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Pistons in 2014, but has played only 63 games in the past two seasons because of injuries.
Meeks developed into a three-point shooting specialist in his NBA career, which has included stops with Milwaukee, Philadelphia, the Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit.
Meeks played only three games in 2015-16 after suffering a foot fracture in the preseason.

Blackhawks rumors 2016: Brian Campbell likely heading back to Chicago, per report

All indications point to Soupy's return.
The signs keep pointing to Brian Campbell's return to the Chicago Blackhawks. Campbell is an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and it "sounds like he's headed back to Chicago," reports the Miami Herald's George Richards. A beat writer for the Panthers, Richards says the team expects Campbell to sign with the Hawks this summer.

UPDATE: Now Richards says the Stars are the more likely team, which would make sense if Campbell wants more money. We'll have to see how this one plays out.
The Campbell rumor has been ongoing for the past few weeks, including a report that said he has "seriously interest" in returning to Chicago. The 37-year-old defenseman has played the past five seasons in Florida after leaving the Hawks, but it seems possible he could take less money in favor of familiarity and the chance at a Cup.
Campbell's family lives in the west suburbs of Chicago during the offseason, so it makes some sense that he would give the Hawks a few extra points in contract talks. The Hawks also won a Cup with Campbell back in 2010, and you have to imagine he wouldn't mind re-creating some of those memories with Jonathan Toews and company as his career winds down.
However, even at his age, Campbell would be an immediate upgrade to the Blackhawks. Last season, Campbell was durable, an excellent possession defenseman and put up 31 points in 82 games. His +5.7 percent Corsi relative is stellar and would be a shot in the arm to a defensive corps that struggled with the possession game at times last season. The possibility of stabilizing the team's top-four and handing the bottom pairing over to some combination of young talent seems like an ideal turnaround after a shaky year on the blue line.
Richards finished his tweet with "who knows," so it's not like this is exactly a rock solid report, but it seems like all indications point towards Campbell's return. Maybe someone swoops in on Friday with an unexpectedly large offer that the Hawks cannot match and Campbell simply cannot refuse, but the veteran defenseman looks like a strong candidate to be the team's big offseason addition.
